Our company worked with Rivian Automotive, to design the alpha build for their in-vehicle HMI system. The client wanted to target two specific user groups to start. One being gig workers; people who work for Uber, Lyft, GrubHub, Postmates, etc. and often rotate through different types of jobs in a single day - the goal with this storyline was to illustrate examples of how the technology would make their transition from job to job totally seamless and close to automated. The other main user group was adventure seekers; people who participate in outdoor sports with a lot of gear and live in small apartments.
We created a storyline for each user group that incorporated various features, some very abstract, into three in-vehicle screens, with animated transitions between each story point, as well as a companion phone application, and a control screen for the presenter. In a second phase we went further in depth on the mobile experience of receiving, using, and returning a vehicle. We also created a demonstration of how the HMI would change while the vehicle was being driven.
We designed a system incorporating five different devices to show the full user experience both in and out of vehicle as well as the presenter controls. Since this was an alpha build each in-vehicle screen made use of a phone or tablet. We devised a system for how the content would display to the user focusing interaction on screen 3 and using screens 1 and 2 for display only.
We created a detailed story flow showing what happens on each screen, how mobile is incorporated, and described animated transitions.

Users can reserve an XYZ ahead of time, or on the go. Using the app they can decide what they’ll need it for, how long, and more.
While a gig worker is on the job they can use their phone as a companion, as they get in and out of their vehicle, reviewing their completed gigs and more.
